Evaluation Report
Section 1; Evaluation of costume with response to evaluation criteria
Design Brief
The design brief was answered and responded too accordingly as the undergarment does suit a young, female peasant. The garment is large and spacey due to the squared facing and splits that have been added to the garment. The garment also suits the other two pieces of the medieval costume and is suitable for all types of weather. This is because it is a simple undergarment and if it gets hot then she can take the cape off and she will be left with a short sleeved tunic and if it is cold, she can put the cape back on to warm her up. Context The context is mentioned at the beginning of the brief as the garment is supposed to be made for a female, peasant, living in the medieval times. This has been done as the undergarment that has been created is a small dress and is made with a time appropriate fabric of cotton, rather than a synthetic fabric. Historical Style The squared facing has reflected the historical style of the garment, which is the medieval times (1100-1400). This is because squared facing was very popular during those times as they did not have a lot of closures, as this was a cheaper alternative. It allows the neck hole to open up and fit a range of head sizes through the neck hole. Also, the material chosen fits the historical style as this fabric was very popular and cheap for a peasant to make their clothes out of. |
Sustainability Issues
As costumes should have a fairly long life span, the garment should last a long time thus responding to sustainability issues. This also reflects the construction techniques used, for example using shorter stitch lengths at the arm holes to prevent them from tearing easily, and using bias tape within the seam. However, I do feel as though the fabric is very thin and may possible rip easily. Although as it is an undergarment it would not be seen and not be able to get caught on anything easily as there would be a dress on top of it protecting it from any damage. Thus, it should last a very long time. Suggestions for improvement Some improvements that could occur include making the arm holes bigger and with more care. Although the arm holes do fit your average person, they may be a little tight when completing duties such as raising your arms to get something off the top shelf. The manufacturing of the arm holes may also be a little better as they are not even on each side. One side of the split is a little messy and there are too many stitches occurring, thus this could be improved in the future. Although the design is supposed to be simple, as it is an undergarment and goes underneath other items of clothing, the design can be changed and manipulated in multiple ways, i.e the squared facing could be a pointed facing. In saying this, the manufacturing of the squared facing is not poor, this point can just be for future designers to pick the type of design they would like to create on their undergarments. The fabric chosen to create the undergarment can be changed if future designers see fit, although I think it should still be light and fairly thin. |
Human-centred design factors
These factors have been answered as the undergarment is a large make and should fit most sizes. However, I think the largest size it would fit would be a size 14, thus it could of been made somewhat bigger to cater to a size larger than 14. The features of the undergarment allows for the individual to complete her daily duties as it is spacey and would not restrict her from part taking in any of her chores.
Constraints and Considerations
In relation to the constraints and considerations put forth, the functionality of the undergarment is quite good as it is functional to suit the lifestyle of a peasant. The construction of the undergarment has been thought about quite well as there are design features such as the squared facing, which enables the undergarment to be constructed well. The top stitching further emphasises this. Also, the squared facing and splits enable to undergarment to be suitable for a range of body types. The cost of the undergarment is fairly cheap which would be within the price range of a peasant. As the material is not dyed and kept white, it does not cost anything extra for the peasant. The quality of the undergarment is average, as I believe it would of been made with more care and somewhat stronger. However, overall it should last a long time as it is an undergarment and there are other items of clothing protecting it from getting damaged. The suitability of the undergarment has been done well as this piece suits the other two garments that have been created and the part of the undergarment that is seen is aesthetically appealing to the eye. The timing of the project has worked out well as the undergarment has been created in time for submission. The historical time period of 1100-1400 has been reflected in the undergarment as this would of been a popular undergarment in worn during this medieval time period. In comparison to the renaissance period where they wore corsets.
