Production Drawings and Technical Specifications
The final dress includes many features, which were present in a traditional female medieval peasants clothing. The neckline is squared with thick straps. This was a common feature as the undergarment was traditionally a higher neckline, and the squared neckline is able to fit larger sized heads and broad shouldered individuals. The gussets on the sides were more commonly featured at the front of the dress, centred, although with one on either side of the dress allows for more material to be present to fit all sized women. The gusset is closed with a rope, which was a popular material to be used in the medieval times. The dress does not contain two pieces, a bodice and a skirt, as this was more traditionally present in the wealthier attire. As this means the dress provides no shape, the gussets, when tied, outline the female figure. The dress length is mid-length, above the ankle and below the knee. This was a usual length for the peasant’s dress, as above the knee was inappropriate, and floor length showed more wealth, as well as being harder for the woman to complete her chores and work. The fabric of the dress is dyed calico. This portrays the rustic, rough appearance, and it was dyed as the dress was usually the coloured part of the medieval female peasants clothing.
